To New York, or not New York

That is today’s question.  My family is trying to decide if we are going to run the New York Marathon again this year (I have done it twice previously).  New York is a really fun marathon and we always enjoy trips to New York.

Our dilemma is that this year it is the day after Halloween, which means we have to be in New York on Halloween at the latest in order to do packet picket and actually be able to run the race the next day.

Our son will be 8 years old come Halloween and we’ve gone trick or treating in our neighborhood every year to date.  We enjoy getting together with friends and taking him around to all the different houses and seeing the decorations.

Compounded with this dilemma is the fact that my brother-in-law, Scott,  has guaranteed entry this year after being denied the previous three years.  My father-in-law and I both qualified for a guaranteed entry this year based on this weekend’s half marathon time at the 3M Half Marathon in Austin.  So this would be the first year we could all do this race together.

As a father I would like my son to have input on this decision, since Halloween is more important to him than running a marathon I’ve already done again.  But then the other side of parenting thinks that it would be a really great experience, to go to New York and have Halloween in a big city and see all the different sites and Haunted Houses that New York City has to offer.

I want to support Scott and Vance in there first running of New York but don’t want to deny my son a fun Halloween with his buddies.

So we put the question to him last night and asked him what he’d like to do.  We will probably make hotel arrangements just in case, since we can’t sign up for another month or two.  Shelley and I are hoping he will see New York as a super exciting trip and will remove the dilemma for us.

So what do you think we should do?  Stay in Austin, or Viva Nueva York?

  1. go to new york! there must be some cool halloween tradition up there that y’all can enjoy. plus i think it is more inspiring for christopher to see you run with your family than hang out with his friends. tell him he can wear his costume to the finish line.

    good luck!

  2. He can trick or treat in New York, right? What about having a Halloween party at your house for all his buddies the weekend before New York? Costume parties are a BLAST!!!

I say New York, and I have two boys, 9 & 11. Life is happening. Grab it while you can, and party Halloween style beforehand!!

  3. wow, I was startled for a second to realize he’ll be 8!!

I think he’s on board with NYC. He loves that city, and he’s decided that he can just trick-or-treat at his family’s hotel rooms a few times each :)
