Thanksgiving Running

turkeytrot08.jpg

It was somehow a hectic week last week, the highlight being of course Thanksgiving. The Livaudais family packed much action into a single day.

We got up and got ready for the Thundercloud Turkey Trot, a local 5 mile race. It would be me, my sister, my brother-in-law, my father-in-law and my son. The four of us would take on the 5 miler and Christopher would tackle the Kids K (which, based on his time, would mean a track scholarship in his future if he doesn’t burn out by High School. We finished the “Kids K” in less than 2 minutes, which converts to a sub 10:00 minute 5k, well ahead of the world record. So take that, Kenyans…Christopher is coming for you).

It was a new course due to the Longhorn Football game in the same area that evening. The start was fairly disorganized because of the new course but they finally got the kids off and running (see above about new potential world record) and then we met up with our friends Steve, Squisha and Baby Kate. Squish was nice enough to watch Christopher so that I could run the race as well. Although I was prepared to give up my run for him, I was glad I didn’t have to.

The gun went off and we began running, The first couple miles were fairly easy and I did them in about what I wanted to. It felt like I was working harder than I actually was, so I wasn’t sure if I wasn’t recovered from San Antonio or if I was coming down with something (by the end of the weekend I had a scratchy throat, but I don’t think this affected the race very much).

I liked the new course, but I wasn’t sure when it was going to be over and what the route would be. Had I bothered to listen to my father-in-law he could have given me the exact route, but alas, I didn’t. The first mile was definitely long based on both my time and my GPS, but it catch back up in miles 4 and 5 to finish fairly accurately at 5 miles.

My splits were:
Mile 1: 6:18
Mile 2: 6:16
Mile 3: 6:06
Mile 4: 6:21
Mile 5: 5:56
=========
30:59

So I managed to sneak under 31 minutes and finished with a new 5 miler PR (granted I only run this distance on Thanksgiving). Then we rushed home started consuming some Jim Beam Black while waiting for the Turkey that my lovely wife had stayed home cooking. The turkey was excellent and copious amounts of wine and food were consumed by all.

We watched the first quarter of the Dallas Cowboys game and then rushed back downtown to tailgate and then hit the Longhorn football game, which of course Texas won. But it wouldn’t be even for the black-hearted BCS.

We got home a little before midnight and fell into bed. It was much more activity than we usually cram into a day.
