Friday Q&A: Am I ready for an Ultra?
I’ve done 8 marathons over the last six years. I never finishing feeling super great but I haven’t totally bonked yet. I’d like to try an ultra but I am not sure if I am ready. Do I need to change my training for trying an Ultra? -Ryan in Houston
First of all, congrats on the marathons. I am not a huge expert in running ultras, but I have done an handful. I think that you are the only one who can decide if you are ready, but since you’ve finished 8 marathons already then I think an ultra is well within your range.
I would recommend that you pick a 50k as your first ultra. This is basically a marathon with a 5 mile warm up. Hah!
Since you are in Houston, I would seriously consider doing Sun Mart in Huntsville. This is a very good race to start with, it is very well supported, well marked, and pretty easy trails. You will also get the best goodie bag in the country with gear that well exceeds your entry fee. It’s coming up in December, so if you’re in marathon shape now, I think you’re golden.
I would run my long runs on Saturday and then go for a 4-5 mile run on Sunday to get used to running on tired legs. I don’t feel like you have to run more than marathon distance in training in order to complete a 50k.
I actually don’t really change my training for much of anything. I’ve done a handful of 50ks, a 40-miler and a 50-miler all off of the smae amount of base training. In an ultra you go slower than in a road marathon which will help you go longer.
The biggest hurdle to watch out for in an Ultra to me is your nutrition. You will be out there for much longer than a typical marathon (most likely at least an hour longer), so you need to make sure you are taking in enough calories. I also run with a water bottle in ultras as the aid stations are typically miles apart. Make sure you bring enough gels. There will be lots of food at most ultras during the race (one of the best reasons to run them), I really enjoy the PBJ sandwiches and the salty chips. I recommend that you try out any new foods you are looking to try ahead of time.
I think running ultras is as much mental as it is physical. So if you think you can do it, then you can. Best of Luck.
