Sore Ankles

ankle.jpg

My ankles are really sore these days.   I’m sure it is because they are just too tight, and I know I should do some ankle strengthening exercises, but I am basically lazy and can never seem to make myself do them.

I think what I really want is something that I could do for 10 minutes and fix the problem forever and then not have to do again. In fact, this is how I’d like to marathon train too.  10 minutes of a really hard workout and call it a week.

We have a  wobbleboard that is kind of fun to stand on for a few minutes (I’m still not sure how long or often you need to use this to be effective, but apparently it isn’t 2 minutes every other week).  I’ve done the calf raises on the stairs (which I actually don’t mind), pulling with a towel on your foot, “writing” the alphabet with your feet and none of it ever sticks.

Whenever I get up in the morning, usually 1-2 hours after my wife, my ankles are super tight and crackily. [NOTE: word press doesn’t think crackily is a word, but trust me, this is how my ankles are in the morning]

Perhaps my ankles aren’t weak, just inflexible.  Which would make my ankles on par with the rest of my body.  Maybe what I really need is ankle stretching exercises.

Anyone have any good ones of those?

  1. Hey Frank…my two cents…just incorporate the ankle attention into your pre and post run stretching. Ones that come to mind….gently….rotating the entire foot, another would be extension (toe point) and flexion (toes up) with the foot, also rotate the sole of the foot inward (pronation) and then outward (supination). That is all I’ve got and they actually feel good to do.

  2. If you’re into swimming as well, just swimming with fins on is supposed to help increase ankle flexibility. And it’s a super fun way to stretch :-)

  3. I’m with you on the crackily ankles…knees…everything. I sound like an out of sync percussion section when I get up. And I continue to do nothing about it.
