Caffeine

I normally don’t drink much caffeine, but after returning from Alaska on Wednesday morning I had to “kick it up a notch”. We left Anchorage at 9pm (midnight Texas time), and then landed around 6:30am. I never can sleep on airplanes no matter what I try (Tylenol PM, Ambien, Red Wine, some mixture) and so when we got to Dallas I was totally beat. We waited for our next flight and then finally got back to Austin at 9:15 in the morning. I had an all day meeting so Shelley dropped me off at my office on the way home from the airport.

I was barely awake, so I knew I needed to caffeinate. I had a Mountain Dew and started feeling a little better, then just for good measure I had another. This got me going and I was slightly sketchy awake until dinner. We went out to dinner after work and I struggled to stay awake, somehow the red wine (Murphy Goode Liar’s Dice) didn’t help keep me awake.

I got home and put Christopher to bed, nearly falling asleep in his bed. After he went down I stumbled downstairs and passed out feel asleep.

Then yesterday I was still pretty tired, so at lunch I had a couple diet cokes and was wired. Since I had actually gotten some sleep the night before the caffeine was able to take control. By midnight I was still wide awake and knew I wouldn’t be going to sleep anytime soon, so paraphrasing the Rolling Stones I reached for my old friend,Father’s Little Helper, also known as Non-Aspirin PM (which is the Costco knockoff of Tylenol PM), by 12:30 I was asleep. Thank you God of modern chemistry.

Getting up this morning was tough, as I had to get up early (for me anyways) so that I could knock out a run before taking Christopher to meet his new First Grade teacher. The alarm buzzed at 6:40am and I groaned. Somehow in the next 15 minutes I was able to get dressed, grab my watch and head out the door. 4.5 miles later I was wide awake and felt great. I took a shower and then we headed to meet his teacher. I’m now back to feeling normal without Mr. Caffeine.

I think the lack of running was what makes me the most tired. Since the Humpy’s Marathon I’ve only run twice for a total of 7.5 miles. It’s going to be a really easy week in terms of mileage. Gotta crank it up next week.

  1. I don’t know what they’re doing to Diet Coke lately, but I am amped past midnight if I drink one past 2pm!

  2. If I have caffeine after lunch I know I will either not sleep, or need to hit the Tylenol PM.
