Swimming in the pool - Take two

The last time I got in the water I foolishly thought I had swam a mile in 22:08, which is mathematically impossible when you suck as bad at swimming as I do. It turned out that it was only a half mile, which made a lot more sense, but also projects a horrible 1:50ish Ironman swim.My only other Ironman swim was 1:15. I’d be totally psyched if I hit close to that this time. I’m figuring that a 1:30 is a more realistic time, adding in the wetsuit and some possible drafting and just race day excitement. But that means I need to knock somewhere around 20 minutes off my swim time. Of course I am just using huge SWAGs on my swim time, since I don’t think just multiplying a half mile swim by 5 really yields an accurate Ironman prediction. But I guess we will know next week.Tuesday morning, I decided I needed to get back in the pool. I dropped Christopher off at school, grabbed a 4 mile run and then biked over to the pool. I planned on swimming half a mile this time, so there would be no delusions of grandeur this time. I slapped on my Seal Mask and started across the pool.

This time went a lot better for me, I spent less time with my head out of the water and I didn’t swam any laps froggy style, which I had the previous time just to catch my breath. I finished in 19:40, which means I knocked almost 2.5 minutes off my swim from last time, which should yield a 10 minute benefit for Ironman. So now I am projecting somewhere better than 1:40 in Idaho. We’ll see since I still have to swim a lot farther.

I’m going to try and get to the pool this weekend and knock out a mile just to see if I can do it in around 40 minutes or if I really fall off after a half.

See you in the pool.
