So once again I’ve taken myself out of the running for Father of the Year
First strike against me came when I had scheduled the trip to leave during Christopher’s Mother’s Day sing-a-long at Kindergarden. (In my defense, I booked first). I thought what’s the big deal? Let’s go! When we asked Christopher if he’d rather due the sing-a-long or go see Mt. Rushmore, he started to break down and while he tried to be tough he said he really wanted to do the sing-a-long and that Mommy had to be there as it was a Mother’s Day program. So now I feel like a total heel, and go off to fight the battle with American Airlines and try to change our flights.
Initially all the mileage flights are booked, so I beg, and then up the mileage awards to first class and that gets them to let one person on the flight. So I’m still down one seat. I beg some more and put in a formal request for an override and after working with a very helpful agent I get my wife and son upgraded to First Class on the later flights, so the trip has been saved, Mt. Rushmore here we come. +1 for Dad!
Sooooooo, that takes us to last night when I go to Mt. Rushmore website and start reading about all the cool history of it. I hadn’t seen it in 25 years or so, so it was a good refresher. Well, I get to the point where it talks about a lighting ceremony at 9pm, and then we start talking about finding a way to attend the lighting ceremony and still making it to the hotel for the Saturday marathon. I do a quick Google Maps, and it turns out that Mt. Rushmore is 413 miles away, which is the complete wrong side of the state. Great, way to go Dad!
It begs the question of why I just Google Mapped this on the Monday night before leaving in 4 days, but … well I did.
So this morning I had to break the news to Christopher that we are no longer going to Mt. Rushmore, and I began the hard-sell on how cool it is to fly First Class and the fact that both Hotels we are staying in have pools and how cool that is.
Lucky for me Christopher is a very easy going kid and while he was a little sad about missing Mt. Rushmore he was excited about going on a trip, flying in a plane and getting some swimming in.
So while I won’t win father of the year, my wife and son still love me, which is all that matters to me.
