Running on empty

empty-fuel-gauge.jpg

Today was my last run before the Boston Marathon this coming Monday.  I was out pretty late last night with some friends from work and didn’t make it home until 3:30am.  This really is the city that never sleeps.  We had dinner around 9pm and then the next thing I knew it was 3:30am.  I have no idea how time flew by that fast.  I hope it goes by that fast on Monday.

I woke up about 9am, which is really late, and somehow felt pretty good all things considered.  I don’t think my body realized that it had gotten less than 6 hours of sleep.  I rallied enough to get on my running clothes and head up to Central Park.  I love running in Central Park and this was my first time to run it on the weekend outside of the New York City Marathon.  The crowds were much larger and there was a lot of energy (from everyone except for me it would seem).

I struggled through 5 miles at just under 8 minute pace, but it sure felt a lot harder.  My joints are really achy today, I don’t know if I am still not recovered from two weeks ago, if I’m just getting older, or if it was the wine and cocktails last night.  I suspect the later, and secretly hope that is the case.  I’m hoping my ankles and hips will feel better now that I have started chugging Gatorade and Propel to rehydrate.

The weather is phenomenal here today, low 70s, sunny, no wind.  Just beautiful.  It’s days like these that make me understand why people live in New York City, but then there are the other nine months of the year (and the rent) that I just can’t understand why they stay.

See you on Monday live from Boston.
