Beware the Ides of March

I think the Ides are out to get me. Not really sure what that means, but I feel sick and I need to blame someone. So, sorry, Ides - it’s you.

Last week was spent on a cruise ship going through the Pacific into Mexico. They made a big deal of asking if you had the flu when you got on because they said lots of people were sick. Great, I thought, just what I need. Shelley had been slightly under the weather before we left but I felt okay. So I figured, being cooped up on a boat with sick people … what could go wrong?

Somewhere along the way, between not sleeping enough and probably drinking more than I should, combined with being stuck on a boat with 2500 other people (lots of them apparently sick) I started getting sick. The last two days I was coughing up some interesting stuff. But it hadn’t been affecting my running (other than when I wimped out in the gym). Yesterday I had a pretty good 4 mile run at about 7:44/M pace, so I thought I’d be able to just power through the sickness like I usually try to do.

Fast forward to today. We stayed up late watching 3:10 to Yuma, which was probably the best Western that I’ve seen (but then again, I haven’t seen that many). So when the morning came both Christopher and I struggled to get out of bed. Somehow Shelley was her usual chipper self at 6:30am. I contemplated staying in bed, but really enjoy walking my son to school so struggled to some form of consciousness. After dropping him off at school I usually run 4-5 miles and then head into work. This morning I just felt terrible. I was totally unmotivated to run, my breathing was ragged and I just felt like crap. So a mile into the run I decided to turn it around and head for home and save it for tomorrow.

I plodded back home and finished up with a 2 mile run at 8:40/M pace and I felt lucky to do that.

So Ides of March, to quote Francis from Stripes: “You just made the list, buddy.” Hopefully I can shake off this gunk by the weekend when I try to add Washington State to my list of states (#38).
