On the road again …

People often ask me what marathon am I running this weekend and where is it.  While I don’t actually run a marathon every weekend, I’m am sure that to my wife, it seems like I do.

So what is coming up in Frank’s Marathon world?

In March I finished the Napa Valley Marathon and will hit the Easter Marathon in Olympia, Washington on March 22nd.   That will finish up March, and then in April, of course there will be Boston on April 21st.  I will attempt to qualify for Boston at Boston for the first time.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Boston Marathon.  I love the idea of Boston, but don’t really care for the course or the weather.  I’ve had two of my worst races ever at Boston when the mercury went way too high for me and I cratered big time.  The first year I wound up almost passing out riding the T back to our car; luckily some EMTs on their way home checked me out and told me I needed sodium and fluids right away.  But that’s another story for another time.

I’m convinced that if Boston wasn’t Boston then very few people who ever run it more than once. Its like how you may not want to date a certain girl but then if you find out she doesn’t want to date you, you can’t imagine why, and now you must find a way to date her.  The history of Boston is awesome and the crowds are second to none, but the logistics of the race kind of suck.  For the longest time the race started at noon and you had to get up super early to catch the buses just to wait for hours in the grassy knoll. Thankfully they’ve moved the time up to 10am.  Hopefully this year I can qualify at Boston and knock another monkey off my back.

But back to the story, where else will we be going? I wouldn’t mind picking up Tennessee in early April but probably will just wait until Boston. However in May it gets interesting again.  I am heavily leaning towards the South Dakota/Iowa double in early May.  I’m currently lobbying my partner in marathon crime Scott (my brother-in-law), my wife and son (who will spectate) and my father-in-law who I’m hoping will join us for the half-marathon.

And after that?  Who knows.  I can’t plan any farther than 2 months or so.

Where will you be?  Let me know and maybe we can all meet up sometime.
