Hello world!

Welcome to Marathon Me. This is a site about, well, marathons and me.

I’ve been thinking of doing a site like this for quite some time. I’d like to be able to look back in a few years and have a nice running (no pun intended) commentary on what I’ve accomplished, people I’ve met, and places I’ve seen. To date I’ve written a few race reports here and there, but wish I had done a better job over the last few years. I’d also like for my son to read this as he grows up - so he can see what a nut job his dad is.

Why now, you ask? Well, that’s a good question.

A couple of weeks ago I completed a big goal for myself by breaking three hours at the AT&T Austin Marathon. The weeks before and after this event have been a sort of media circus for me (previously I think the last time I was in the paper was either way back in high school or a small local paper (and my wife wrote that!)). So this was quite a change for me. I was featured in a pre-marathon video profile of several other competing in the marathon, and then after I met my goal the Austin American-Statesman wrote a nice article on me. From there it was a request for the local runners club newsletter and eventually I found myself on the home page of Runners World. Which was not a place I ever expected to wind up 6 years ago when I began marathoning.

I feel like I have lots to catch you up on in the “Marathon World According to Frank” (apologies to John Irving). I hope you find it interesting, occasionally funny, and that hopefully along the way we’ll all learn a thing or two.

Like many of you, I don’t have a lot of time for training and am always looking for ways to squeeze in training around family and work.

In the upcoming posts I will go more into my background, how I got started, how I am training, what I am reading, and where I will be running. If anyone actually starts reading this blog, I will be more than happy to answer questions.

I’ve tried a lot of things, with varying rates of success, and along the way I’ve run 67 marathon or longer races and have managed to mostly avoid being injured. I’ve run with the flu, I’ve run Saturday/Sunday marathons, some 50ks, a 40 miler and a 50 miler. I’ve also done an Ironman , and plan on doing it again this summer (I haven’t started training for it yet, but more on that later). I really enjoy running and seeing the country and world as we go. I’m blessed to have a wife who is mostly (okay, way more understanding that I have a right to hope for; in fact, she is destined for Sainthood) understanding about this craziness.

I welcome you to join me on my journey.

Happy trails.

  1. Hey Frank, just thought I would say congrats on your p.r. at austin!! It was my first marathon and I had a blast! 3:43:06 for me, and I was happy with that, although I look forward to improving, as you have. Again congrats! And I look forward to following your progress!

  2. welcome!

    when not chased.

  3. Brian, that’s a great first marathon. My first marathon was a 3:53, so you’ve got me handily beat!

    What’s your next race?

  4. RunsIfChased,

You need to run so you can eat anything you want. Or maybe that why *I* need to run. Having actually met you, you can pretty much eat anything you want already. So maybe you do only need to run if chased. =)
